Wear loose clothing that allows easy access to the areas being studied. Tell your physician if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, take blood thinners, or have any bleeding concerns. No imaging contrast or sedation is used.

You sit or lie comfortably while surface electrodes are taped to the skin. As each nerve is stimulated, you will feel a brief tingle or a quick, mild electric tap — momentarily surprising but not harmful. There are no needles for the NCS itself; any needle electrodes belong to a paired EMG. No image guidance is required, as the test relies on surface anatomy and the electrical recordings.
After
There is no recovery time. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately, including work. The skin may show faint marks from the electrodes that fade quickly. Your physician reviews the recordings — often alongside the EMG findings — and discusses results and next steps with you.
Typical duration
Most studies take about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on how many nerves are examined. When combined with EMG, plan for somewhat longer. Because no sedation is involved, there are no restrictions on eating or driving afterward.
